It's Plastic Free July 🎉

Celebrating Plastic Free July 🎉

To celebrate Plastic Free July we wanted to give you a quick overview or some of the brands making waves in reducing plastic within our amazing industry in the UK.

WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) launched the UK Plastics Pact, back in 2018 in conjunction with the Ellen McCarthur foundation. A huge list of UK brands signed up to a commitment to reducing plastic used in the food industry. The full list can be viewed here.

The 4 commitments these brands signed up to are the following:

1. Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse) delivery model.

2. 100% of plastics packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.

3. 70% of plastics packaging effectively recycled or composted.

4. 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.

Here’s what 5 of these brands have done so far:

1.Smarties

The first global confectionery company to use recyclable paper packaging was Smarties, owned by Nestlé. This change is a significant step toward the corporation's goal of having 100% of its packaging recyclable or reused by 2025, a goal we wholeheartedly support!

2.Evian

Back in 2020, Evian released their most recent development in environmentally friendly packaging: label-free, recyclable water bottles made entirely of recycled plastic. It intends to implement this across all of its water bottles soon, with the goal of becoming a "completely circular" brand by 2025.

3.Carlsberg

Carlsberg replaced their plastic ring pack with sustainable glue, back in 2018 and is currently trialling their innovative fibre bottle initiative. Eight Western European markets, including Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, and France, are testing 8,000 Fibre Bottles. The bottles will be distributed to local consumers, clients, and other stakeholders through a number of major events and festivals as well as focused product samplings.

4. Ella’s Kitchen

Ella's kitchen, Gualapack, and Sabic have collaborated to introduce a baby food cap made of cutting-edge recycled plastics. The UK’s number 1 baby food brand has developed a new cap that will be on 3.5 million pouches available on the shelves from early 2022.

5.  Aldi

Head to the Aldi website for full details of how the innovative Supermarket brand has committed to the pact. On top of their own packaging commitments they have also committed to never sell single-use plastic plates, cutlery and cups, and have removed all plastic straws and cotton buds!
