Sustainability Shout Outs - September 2022

Our top 3 sustainability snippets from the food and drinks industry, this month.

1: Aldi open’s new eco-friendly store.

Aldi opened it’s first eco-friendly store in Royal Leamington Spa on 29th September, some items being sold cheaper than in other stores. Food that doesn't come in packaging will have reduced prices, a great step for more eco-friendly food shopping.

Customers will need to bring their own containers or will be able utilise complimentary eco-friendly paper bags to load up on their packaging free items.

There will also be a new recycling station where customers will be able to dispose of goods that are not collected by local authorities. Vehicle batteries and Christmas wrapping paper are two examples of what they’ll be able to recycle.

The building itself is composed of environmentally friendly materials, contains solar panels, and even has a section of green roof. According to Aldi, the store will use 57% less energy than a typical shop, which will help save costs.

3: Key message from Climate Week 2022 in NYC

Get it done! - was the key message from this year’s Climate Week, which took place in New York from 19th September.

Since 2004, The Climate Group, a non-profit organisation working to achieve a world with net zero carbon emissions by 2050, has organised Climate Week, a series of core events that sparks a variety of ancillary activities organised by NGOs, coalitions, businesses, foundations, and other institutions during a week in September.
